about

During his first few years of recording and performing, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mike Marchant was named “one of Denver’s most admired songwriters and performers” by the Denver Post and “one of Denver’s most celebrated songwriters” by Westword. The AV Club wrote that Marchant’s early projects “demonstrated a lackadaisical mastery of dreamy, druggy indie folk.” After being sidelined by cancer treatments and substance abuse issues, Marchant abandoned his creative projects and moved to New Mexico in pursuit of a quieter, healthier lifestyle. There, he met Luke Bern Carr, a songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist who had achieved a similar rise to local prominence in Santa Fe. The two like-minded DIY musicians formed a project together, releasing EPs in 2018 and 2019 while developing their atmospheric, hook-driven indie rock sound.

With “The Whole Pulse”, Marchant and Carr make the most of the full-length format, presenting a loosely conceptual exploration of death and impermanence over the course of 12 musically and thematically linked tracks. Working in their own studios, the duo augment their traditional rock band instrumentation with warm analog electronics and dense vocal arrangements, building a modern DIY ‘wall of sound’ production style. The songs themselves are simple and melodic, leaving plenty of space for ambitious arrangements and adventurous sonic experimentation. “I’m interested in exploring the reverberations that arrive after someone or something significant is gone, and the ways we interact with those reverberations,” Marchant says. “The idea that someday I’ll die and become the effects of my actions while I was here—that’s inspiring to me. I’m telling a story about waking up to that and learning to see death through a warm lens.”
